I have always thought that PSSD has nothing to do with the libido and erection problems that occur while you are on SSRI, but it is like a switch that is turned off when stopping the medication, perhaps as a body response to a rebound of the Sexuality inhibited by drugs. And the body encourages that new rebound of excessively high quality by inhibiting or extinguishing it.

What drug were you on?

I think many people are generally unaware of what is happening to them until things become very noticeable. Full pssd kicked in for me about one year after ssri exposure mostly thanks to 5htp as a quick fix to deal with some disabling anxiety. I'm now beginning to think the anxiety was attributed to protracted withdrawal syndrome of sertraline and also I had recently withdrawn from a trial of concerta for 3 months. I think most people have pssd like symptoms without even being aware of it. Either whilst on ssri or after discontinuing. When I was on sertraline I had sexual dysfunction, not completely numb or impotent but everything was muted to some extent. The thing is, I'm only aware of this now. Looking back I can tell there was a severe lack of arousal/libido. Perhaps it was because of the disinterest in women, which I was aware of, that made me think everything was normal as I wasn't in any relationship to know otherwise. Also post-sertraline and before full pssd I felt that my sexual function was totally normal. But now looking back I can probably say that orgasm was a lot weaker than a few years ago. I feel as if orgasm is one of the first symptoms to erode in intensity with frequent ssri use. It seems that the blunted emotions of being on drugs and of withdrawal seem to help the mind downplay the significance of any sexually related issue.

I had sexual dysfunction while on Citalopram. When I went off, it didn't go away in even the slightest.

Hi

Was taking Fluoxetine for a few years, at least, and never had any problems at all. Switched to Sertraline 50mg because post cancer treatment depression became unbearable.

I took 3 doses and PSSD arrived on the first or second day. The symptoms, no libido, no reaction to sexual stimuli...real life or porn, poor and difficult to achieve erections, perineum pain, and reduced semen volume...have remained to this day...8 months later.

I do have the very occasional little spark of reaction to sexual stimuli, but very fleeting.... this does give me hope that my poor brain is trying to repair itself.

God knows what state I would be in if I had taken them for weeks!
Male
PSSD after 3 days on Sertraline (50mg) (Aurobindo) December 2016 to date.
Tinnitus, insomnia (1.5 hours/night sleep) poor memory/cognition as a bonus!
Possibly PSSD from October 1998...just didn't realise what I was suffering from! (pre internet)

All of my symptoms including insomnia, PSSD, etc began just a couple of weeks after starting SSRIs. For me, they just persisted after quitting.

The one post SSRI symptom I developed after quitting was a bad reaction to eating carbs. It started about a week after I think. If I eat carbs or even protein early in the day, I develop a terrible fog for the rest of the day or until I (rarely) manage to have a nap. This is one thing that has actually gotten worse over the years.

For me PSSD began the while I was re- increasing the dose because I was thinking it was depression. In reality it was a pre-mild-PSSD state after long period of low doses of Citalopram. When I realized it was because the drug, I tapered in a week but PSSD was already there.

For me, it happened while on SSRI and then continued worse upon quitting.

That's so strange. A lot of people are talking about delayed PSSD. Maybe their depression worsened because of getting off of the SSRI. For me, Lexapro and Citalopram both worked amazingly. I'm really torn about going back on them. My depression has been kind of out of control lately.
