Badge system to incentivise contribution

Over the past few days, there's been some discussion about the actions we could be taking to better our chances of recovery. Some members advocate for an individual trial-and-error approach using drugs, supplements and nutraceuticals so that we can make our own discoveries; others are more in favour of engaging the medical community for help. Some have noted that the group lacks firm coordination, shared goals and dedication to taking mutual action, rendering us aimless and underproductive.

While a common consensus hasn't been reached, most members seem to come to the same broad conclusion: we need to take unified action if we want to see any concrete developments.

As several users have pointed out, a substantial amount of the content here is from members who come to vent their frustrations. Meanwhile, there seems to be only a handful of members devoted to making a difference. Seeing that there have been a few people expressing the same viewpoint, I think it's time to take advantage of the discussion before it passes for good.

Now, I don't know how to run a forum. What I do know is that people are more willing to give when their contributions are recognised, and that others are more likely to act accordingly once they see that there is some reward in it for them.

What I propose: a donations page/PayPal account and a badge system.

A quick Google search shows that a few extensions are available to phpBB forums to add "profile flair". Whether or not this particular version of phpBB can accommodate for this I am unsure (again, I don't know how to run a forum) but I will link them nonetheless.

Here are some of my badge ideas:

- contributed to the genome project
- donated >$5/month to the donations page
- helped further scientific discussion
- written detailed reports about drug trials

As for the donations accounts, I think we should elect 2-3 trusted members to direct the use of our funds to worthwhile ventures - better to concentrate our forces into one or two areas of interest than to try to micromanage a myriad of smaller initiatives at once. Funding studies, finding treatment options and extending our outreach will all seem a lot more feasible once this framework is in place. I believe putting these measures into practice would help give the group purpose and direction.

Do you guys think these things would be worth doing? Do you see any limitations to these ideas or have anything else to suggest? Please let me know what your thoughts are.

That's a really nice idea. This forum seems to use a generic template so I don't know how hard it would be to implement. But it definitely would lead to a lot more action I think.

It's a good idea. I think that anything on that level would require moloch because she owns the entire site. my hands are tied when it comes to adding extensions.
