9/10 people who attempt suicide *do not die by suicide* at a later date. It does not say they don't attempt again. Actually, one of the biggest predictors of a future death by suicide is a previous suicide attempt. An even bigger predictor? Multiple suicide attempts. Let's think about these stats. For every 25 people who attempt suicide, only 1 person dies. That either indicates that suicide is an incredibly difficult thing to do, or the attempters were not entirely serious, or both. Now, let's consider something else. Suicide makes up just 1.68% of United States deaths (at least in 2016, according to https://ourworldindata.org/what-does-the-world-die-from.) So the 10% of suicide attempters who eventually die by suicide is a pretty large number in comparison.

It’s not just an emotional knee jerk reaction, words are so important in influencing a desperate persons emotional status in regards to suffering from PSSD. If you write an article and it makes somebody want to kill themselves and ignore many cases of improvement or responses to treatment, plus calling us buried alive and under the modern version of the hom-dai curse it’s not “overly emotional” to suggest that this person isn’t doing a very good job at being honest with us or helping us.

And in terms of working to find a cure, what has he done? Some goofy vague TRP ion channel theory/neuropathy theory with no evidence whatsoever minus a couple studies about erectile dysfunction in diabetic rats vs 10 trillion scientific articles about the influence of serotonin, dopamine, and sex hormones in sexuality and sexual function, all of those aspects have been confirmed to be effected by anti-depressants over and over again. I wonder which pathways are more likely implicated in PSSD?

In terms of other excellent physicians and world class scientists that have worked on the science behind PSSD this includes antonei B csoka, Dr. Roberto melcangi, dr Irwin Goldstein and others. Healy is not the “only doctor” and I honestly think he’s the most clueless in what to do about it.

Healy is the only currently bringing media attention and activism to PSSD. RiskX has raised just over 60K towards researching PSSD.

Dr Irwin Goldstein really??? Whats he done but offer a cocktail of meds and antidepressants followed by back surgery because of his theory that genital numbness is from a back injury? At a heft price as as well

Ive been beating a dead horse on this but we need more activism and attention on mainstream media outlets about PSSD. I believe this is what DR Healy is doing with this recent post. He's trolling to get PSSD the much needed attention it deserves.

I didn’t say Irwin Goldstein was perfect, I’ve read some reviews of a couple of people who had very negative things to say about him, he seems to understand the science behind this pretty well however, most individuals who have seen him have had very positive things to say to him. Ghost, this forums leader and one of the brightest people I’ve seen seems to trust him and respect him and while I dont want to give an argument from authority, he seems quite legit. His writing about nerves in genitals isn’t just about back issues, his website includes information about how androgens are necessary for the integrity of genital nerves.

Do those “antidepressants” you’re referring to include things like flibanserin, cabergoline, busiprone etc? Those things are absolute nothing like SSRI’s, flibanserin has pretty much the opposite effects. Antidepressants are about as diverse and different as “mammals” everything from shrews to whales in terms of variety and effects. ( kind of a goofy analogy but whatever )

Trolling about PSSD is awful if it is likely to induce suicidal thoughts. I don’t know if Healy gives any empthathy to how his writings effect sufferers. You can be aggressive in your spreading of awareness, demonstrate how serious the condition is, do good things like raise 60K dollars, without ignoring reported treatment responses and claiming viagra and dopamine medications are useless in the exact articles he cites in his papers and calling people cursed and floating the idea of dying in some stupid hunger strike.

Mary, I tried to explain that in my previous post already. The message I am trying to deliver to everybody remains anyway unchanged and it is derived from the facts - vast majority of people who unsuccessfully attempt suicide change their mind and never ever attempt to take their life again. I write this for suicidal people to change their current mindset and to give this a thought. I think it is a very strong positive message from that Harvard article. I am trying to keep people positive here about their future - because the future is there - even for the most affected by this syndrome and therefore for all of us. Maybe it is already waiting around the corner, but noone on this Earth can cure a dead person, walking dead yes, but actually dead no

Well,
I love my life again but....first year was.....ufff
Now, Healey by writing about AS for PSSD (etc.)
wants to show how awful is PSSD.
It is: "Look...if we think about AS for them it must be really awful"
One way or another he wants to draw attention of medical community.
He compares PSSDesed ppl to those with HIV in 90s, collects money for prize, writes petitions, writes dubious articles (like this one mentioned in post above)....but almost 0 support for him from PSSD victims.
Everyone has better idea what to do with money, what should be written....etc.
BTW think about Dark047, and almost 50 victims of PFS....and God one knows how many others...do you think that AS is so bad idea? They couldn't stand it...
ONE MORE THING
SUICIDE is BAD choice....and LIFE can be good again

Even though I have a mild case I will most likely kms this summer if I don't find a cure. I don't care if it's possible that there will be a cure in a certain amount of time. I prefer to end the suffering now. Anyway it's not like you can experience regret over killing yourself if a cure is later found. So what's the point in enduring meaningless suffering.

I’m exactly where you are rn minus the mild case. Couldn’t have said it better myself. My self preservation instinct has kept me alive until now but I’ve desensitized myself to death enough that I think it’s gonna happen this summer if there is not significant hope for pssd. This is not the way to live. I’ve has enough of PSSD, and frankly, would like to erase the thought from my mind forever:).

A hypothetical person is tortured for a decade but then achieves absolutely everything they ever could want and the most joyful existence for 5 decades.

Would that be a rational decision for someone to kill themselves before the 5 good decades? That is the worst decision someone could possibly make. Too many people make it. How many people with treatment resistant depression have killed themselves when it was possible a therapy like ketamine or psychedelic mushrooms could cure them? Several thousands I’d imagine.

I would strongly strongly strongly ask you to reconsider your position and not do that. I got better. I didn’t think it was possible it was.

I was utterly hopeless and suicidal and I am not now. I have hope for the future.

Don’t give up.

I agree, we've all had our chance to chime in here. I'm locking the topic - A lot of people have been asking me to do so.

I'm looking into other ways for us to get better mental-illness support for PSSD. I'm not sure how that would look yet but if anyone has ideas shoot me a PM or email and we can chat.
